What is Corporate Social Responsibility?

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can be very confusing. Is it one of those new Government strategies like the Big Society? Is it, as the name suggests, just for big Business? Is it just something you do in the good times when you can afford it from your bottom line? Is it to do with the environment or the community or your staff?

Although there is, as yet, no formal or legal definition of CSR, the idea of CSR has developed largely over the last sixty years (mainly researched and led by institutions in the USA) and is now gaining momentum against a backdrop of reaction to occasional corporate greed, environmental concerns and easier communication between consumers.   The current, broad CSR agenda in the UK is being driven more by interest from industry - because of societal awareness - than by academic or legal research.

There are good reasons for the promotion of CSR:

* Helping direct the power and influence of business in UK society;

* The potential to stop the harm being inflicted on people and their environment;

* Promoting the social impact of all corporate activities:

* Recognition that Corporations rely on the contribution of a wide set of stakeholders;

* Good business reasons such as brand loyalty, staff development and product differentiation;

Hull and East Yorkshire Community Foundation can help you make sense of it all - helping you develop your CSR strategy, ensuring that it is relevant to your Organisation and producing the impact and benefit expected by your stakeholders.
